Climate Torch Spectacular in the Gorge
Date: Wednesday, 20th August 2008
Start Time: 1:00 PM
Location: the Gorge
Description:

Climate Torch Spectacular in the Gorge

The Climate Torch relay will be in the Tamar Valley on WEDNESDAY 20 AUGUST and will be hurtling across the Gorge in Launceston on a cable to be set up by Bob McMahon soon after midday (time to be confirmed).

TAP would like a small team of 3 or 4 volunteers to assist with setting up and a small dinghy or canoe to transfer the rope across the water in the Gorge.

Also, anyone is welcome to be a spectator for the event when the Climate Torch reaches the Gorge probably around 1pm.

If you can help Bob set things up and would like a bit of fun please give him a call on 0448 547 290 or email bob@orielstudio.com.au

About the Climate Torch Relay http://www.climatetorch.com/?dc=439,428372,2

To solve the climate crisis, we will need a movement unprecedented in Australia's history. To mobilise this movement, GetUp has invented a new device to respond to the climate crisis. You can hold it in one hand. It combines solar power, a wind-turbine, and.... a lemon. It's our climate torch, designed exclusively for GetUp by the creators of the Sydney Olympic torch, and with your help we'll take it to a hundred towns, cities and suburbs across Australia - before arriving in Canberra, where thousands of GetUp members will present it directly to Parliament. Click below to get a first glimpse of what it looks like, and to nominate your town to host it.

No government will ever soar higher than its citizens demand - and most will sink as low as we allow. Now more than ever we must demand this government soars above political spin and vested interests - high enough to provide the climate leadership we need over these coming months when Australia's response to climate change will be locked in.

We have a vision for this torch relay. As it travels around Australia, GetUp members will collect tens of thousands of submissions to the government's climate policy consultation: an unprecedented flood of public opinion. Our leaders need to hear from us - from your town, city and suburb - because industry lobbyists will win this fight if we don't.

What is GetUp: GetUp is an independent, grass-roots community advocacy organisation giving everyday Australians opportunities to get involved and hold politicians accountable on important issues.  Whether it is sending an email to a member of parliament, engaging with the media, attending an event or helping to get a television ad on the air, GetUp members take targeted, coordinated and strategic action.

GetUp does not back any particular party, but aims to build an accountable and progressive Parliament - a Parliament with economic fairness, social justice and environment at its core. GetUp is a not-for-profit and receives no money from any political party or the government. We rely solely on funds and in-kind donations from the Australian public.

RESTORE DEMOCRACY RALLY
Date: Saturday, 23rd August 2008
Start Time: 12:00 PM
Location: City Park, Launceston
Description:

RESTORE DEMOCRACY RALLY

23 August 08, 12.00 noon, City Park, Launceston

TAP is organizing this rally and march. The advertising billboards have gone up around Tasmania. The speakers are being lined up. Organizing a big rally requires a lot of work. There are many relatively small jobs to be done, or alternatively a few extremely big jobs. Let's make it the former and turn up at the TAP meeting on Thursday 24th and put your hand up. TAP needs you.
If you went to the recent public meeting 'Failed Democracy' held at the Tailrace (organized by TAP) you will have a small idea of what we have planned for the rally.

Obtain the promotional banner [177Kb] (from www.tapvision.info ) and send it on to everyone you know. Then print it and stick it on your car window, post boxes, etc.

Ross Story (rally coordinator) has asked for huge 3 sided tents as well as large marquis tents for the day of the rally in case of rain. If you can help, please phone Ross 63943600 or mob 0418304642 or email rossnfi@hotmail.com. Also trailers are required. Anyone who can loan two 6X4 trailers to be mobile advertising for the Aug 23 Rally - please reply to Roger Law at pastimes@bigpond.net.au

GREENS BILL TO REPEAL PULP MILL ASSESSMENT ACT 2007
Date: Wednesday, 27th August 2008
Start Time: 3:15 PM
Location: Albert Hall, Launceston
Description:

GREENS BILL TO REPEAL PULP MILL ASSESSMENT ACT 2007
Debated: 27 August 2008 (i.e. Wednesday after the TAP rally) at Albert Hall, Launceston.

Tasmanian Parliament House - Northern Parliament Sittings: Launceston (Albert Hall) 19-21 August and 26-28 August; Burnie 23-25 September

The Tasmanian Greens will bring on for debate (and a vote) their Pulp Mill Assessment Repeal Bill 2008, which will repeal Lennon's legislation as well as revoke any approvals granted under the Pulp Mill Permit, this WEDNESDAY, the 27th of AUGUST at 3:45 pm at the Albert Hall Launceston, with the vote to occur at 4:30pm.

You can help in the following ways:

1) Email and ring Lisa Singh MP, reminding her that she abstained from the vote on the Pulp Mill Permit motion that occurred on the 30th of August last year, and that you expect her to at least refrain from voting against the Greens' Bill or to actually vote for it.  This is the only consistent thing that she can do. (You can find Nick McKim's media statement reiterating this on http://tas.greens.org.au/News/view_MR.php?ActionID=3229)

2) Contact Premier David Bartlett, and Liberal Leader Will Hodgman calling on them to allow their respective parties a conscience vote on the Greens' Bill

3) Attend the debate in the Royal Albert Hall in Launceston this Wednesday afternoon.  Please remember that the security sign-in process does take awhile so it will be worthwhile arriving from around 3.15 pm, 30 minutes before the debate is scheduled to commence (3:45pm), to ensure that you are signed in and seated.  (Please remember that the Parliament requires those in the public gallery to remain silent during debates.)
