The Forest Practices Plan is unchanged from three years ago, despite parrot expert Peter Brown describing the forest as some of ‘the finest Swift Parrot breeding habitat’ he had ever seen and despite the mass of new information unearthed by the trial and since. Forestry seem determined to bear out Justice Marshall’s conclusion that they are unlikely to take the ‘far more protective stance’ required to protect the beetle, eagle and parrot. With the High Court leaving the way open for logging, the Wielangta campaign is turning to other avenues. Wielangta residents are organising a briefing on the case and a forest picnic has been arranged. And a Senate inquiry into Australia’s environmental laws has been set up, giving everyone an opportunity to have a say about the catastrophic decline of endangered species and the impact of climate change on top of other threats. The terms of reference include the ‘effectiveness’! of Regional Forest Agreements in protecting biodiversity. Public submissions are invited by 5 September. For Wielangta to stay protected either Tasmania’s Premier Bartlett or Prime Minister Rudd will have to intervene. They can re-write the Tasmania RFA overnight, reversing the Howard-Lennon pact to log Wielangta, or the Commonwealth could give notice to terminate the RFA altogether. Please write and urge them to act. The High Court won’t rescue the beetle, the eagle and the parrot but our campaign will! Wielangta briefing. 6 pm Friday 11 July 2008. In the history of the planet, humanity's time on earth has been short--but powerful. Human development has revolutionized industry, science, nutrition and medicine. But it has also effected unprecedented changes in the delicate balance that makes life on earth possible. Essential viewing, more relentless than An Inconvenient Truth. Saturday: 5pm: The Lorax (bring the kids) (1972, 52 mins) - The classic Doctor Suess tale of a young boy meets a ruined industrialist in a treeless wasteland and hears his tale of what has happened to him. His tragic story is about how he began a thriving business with a useless fashion product derived from the trees of a forest. As his business booms, the forest and its inhabitants suffer as he wantonly clearcuts without regard to the warnings of a wise old creature called the Lorax about the dire consequences of his greed. 5.55: Short film 6pm Dinner – Cheap Yummy Meal Provided 7pm: The Carbon Connection - Two communities affected by one new global market – the trade in carbon dioxide. In Scotland a town has been polluted by oil and chemical companies since the 1940s. In Brazil local people's water and land is being swallowed up by destructive monoculture eucalyptus tree plantations. Both communities now share a new threat. The Carbon Connection follows the story of two groups of people from each community who learned to use video cameras and made their own films about living with the impacts of the carbon market. Sunday: 4pm: A Hard Rain (2007, 77 mins) - Twice Academy Award nominee and five time AFI winner David Bradbury explores the `other side' of the nuclear debate. Traversing five countries- China , France , UK , Japan and Australia , A Hard Rain exposes the hidden agendas behind the latest push for Australia to go nuclear and presents a compelling argument against allowing this to happen. With interviews from some of the world's top scientists and environmentalists, including Dr Rosalie Bertell (Canada ), Dr Chris Busby (UK), Dr Mark Diesendorf, Prof. Ian Lowe & Dr Gavin Mudd (Aust), A Hard Rain provides the information you need to know to decide if Australia should head down the nuclear path. 5.30pm: The One tree project (2004, 20 mins) - Is woodchipping a waste of a precious resource? See what can be created using just one tree. A documentary of the journey of a tree from our southern forest through the hands of many creative people. 6:30: Dinner – Cheap Yucky Meal Provided 7pm: Exxon Mobil Climate Change (2007, 65 mins) - This film shows the influence that the largest company in the world has on governments, the media and citizens and what can be done about global warming. While the Earth's climate is pushed further out of balance by increasing use of fossil fuels, ExxonMobil continues to assert undue influence around the world— making record profits while ignoring climate science for which there has been overwhelming consensus for over ten years Contact: Austra Maddox, 62 23 2981, 0408 280 189, denison@tas.greens.org.au Wielangta picnic Date: Saturday, 19th July 2008 Start Time: 11:00 AM Location: See text below Description: Wielangta update Guess what -- Forestry Tasmania have listed the famous Wielangta coupe 19D for logging.
