PARLIAMENTARY RECORD
Nick has developed a reputation as a strong Parliamentary performer and legislator. Nick’s initiatives include:
Ongoing successful advocacy on behalf of survivors of child abuse, including two attempts to establish an independent Commission of Inquiry, the first vote saw a Liberal member cross the floor in support of Nick’s motion, the second attempt received the support of the entire Liberal Party;
Joining with the local community to save Ralphs Bay from inappropriate development;
Successfully nominating the Tasmanian Devil for inclusion on Tasmania’s Threatened Species List;
Exposing government incompetence on major infrastructure projects such as the natural gas rollout and Basslink;
Fighting to end discrimination faced by same-sex couples;
Campaigned to eliminate plastic shopping bags in line with public opinion; and
Support for the Youth Parliament.
Nick has tabled several Bills in Parliament and moved many successful amendments to Bills. Private Members Bills tabled by Nick include:
Same Sex Marriage Bill 2005 –an historic Bill to create a State based marriage system which would remove discrimination faced by same-sex couples;
Chemical Trespass Bill 2004 – to protect waterways and businesses by ensuring the responsible use of chemicals;
Cat Control Bill 2003 –to create a system to register domestic cats as the first step to addressing the feral cat issue;
Protection of Public Participation Bill 2005 – to ensure public debate and to prevent corporations from taking defamation actions.
As a Member of the Parliamentary Environment Resources and Development Committee: presented a minority report on Conservation on Private Land Reference; Report on Compressed Natural Gas; and the current Committee Inquiry into Waste Management.
The major issues in Franklin include: the need to protect the high conservation value forests of the Weld Valley, water quality and the need to protect coastal values, transport infrastructure, and the ongoing crisis in health and affordable housing.
