Kim Booth MP


Kim has experience in sawmilling, business and Local Government and he has represented the people of Bass in Tasmania’s House of Assembly since July 2002.

The Greens Opposition annual Alternative State Budget demonstrates a commitment to sound economic management and job creation. Kim has contributed costed initiatives across a variety of areas including: Emergency Taskforce for Vegetable Growers, a $3.9 million Clean Green Support Package for Farmers, an independent Social and Economic Impact Study into the impact of pokies in pubs and clubs, Statewide audit of Chemical Use, amongst others…

PARLIAMENTARY RECORD

Kim has been a strong advocate in the Parliament on behalf of the people of Bass across a wide array of issues. Kim’s work includes:

  • Fighting for appropriate housing for Launceston residents and winning!;
  • Raising concerns about increased air and effluent pollution from the proposed pulp mill, and advocating that the real value-adding solution is in the Greens’ Forest Transition Strategy (available for download on the web!);
  • Road Safety – Kim has advocated the implementation of a Tasmanian Vision Zero Road Fatality Scheme. He has also exposed the chronic safety issues related to heavy vehicles;
  • Kim has led the way to have an independent economic and social impact study into the impact of pokies on communities and small businesses, as called for by many community organisations, churches, and gambling help groups;
  • Campaigned to have the Betfair licence go through an impact assessment process;
  • Organised state-wide meetings of concerned builders fighting for justice against unfair and absurd government accreditation and insurance requirements;
  • Campaigned on water quality and quantity covering areas such as calling for a state-wide chemical audit on our waterways and groundwater, protection of water catchments such as the Launceston Water Catchment; and
  • Campaigned to extend workers compensation to the State’s jockeys.

Kim has tabled legislation in the Parliament, across key areas. Kim has also successfully moved amendments to government legislation. Private Members Bills tabled by Kim include:

  • Constitution Amendment (Membership of State Parliament) Bill 2002
  • Gaming Control (Ensure Parliament Oversight of Poker Machines Cap) Amendment 2003
  • Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (Control of Use) Amendment (Ban 1080) Bill 2004
  • Animal Welfare (Sale and Ownership of Leg Traps) Amendment Bill 2005

Kim also successfully amended the government’s GE legislation to ensure that Tasmanian farmers are eligible for compensation should their crops be found to be accidently contaminated by GE material.
